Day 1 - Reykjavik (Öskudagur holiday)

We got up this morning at 9:35am for breakfast. This is a view from our room.

Not much of a view, but in the distance you can see the mountains.

Breakfast was bread, some fish, eggs, tomatoes, juice, it's simple but good.  After a quick check of the weather (high of -2 degrees C and low of -6 degrees C) we started our walk along Laugavegur.  It's a street filled with shops, cafes and well, more shops.  We saw lots of kids running up and down the street into shops collecting candy.  Turns out today is Öskudagur which is similar to halloween.  Kids go treat or treating.  There were some really creative costumes, we saw one dressed as a storm trooper, darth maul, a ku klux clan member (for real), dexter (the cartoon), a kid dressed up as a fat kid and well, kids in boxes.  Apparently you have to sing before you get your candy.  I didn't have any candy to give so I didn't get anyone to sing for us, but I did get this.

We decided to take a break and took a short walk along the coast, it's freaking awesome to see mountains!  I helped a group of girls take a group photo.  And they helped us take a photo.  There's quite a few Japanese tourists.

We also went to the famous Hallgrimskirkja church, it was under renovations so we couldn't get in.  Apparently it took 40 years to build and you could take a lift that would take you from the ground floor all the way to the top.

Prior to the church, we took a walk to city hall, which was next to a lake full of ducks.  Near city hall we ran into a couple of high school kids.  One of them greeted me with Konnichiwa. :)  After that we went into a couple of souvenir shops and clothing shops.  Lauren had to buy a belt as her jeans were falling off.

I have more photos but I'll have to post these later as it takes a while to upload.

Time for dinner!  Mmmm delicious goodness.  Tomorrow we're going off to the blue lagoon and an underground tour of the lava caves and tubes.
